Monastic Communities of
Jerusalem
vocation
and charisma
General vocation
In the light of the
Gospel which
calls all the faithful to holiness and all believers to a perfect life,
the
vocation of Jerusalem is inspired by monasticism and adapted
to the demands of modern times.
«In
accordance with the spirit of the Second Vatican Council and with the
Code of Canon Law of 1983, the communities
of Jerusalem are
established in the reality of the Church, in order to have,
through Christ, access in one Spirit to the Father.»
Constitutions,
§1
|
In
a response to the call of today's Church and to the expectations of
this world and of the urban environment, the particular
vocation of the brothers and sisters of Jerusalem is to live in
the heart of the cities, in the heart of God.
By common prayer and brotherly love, they want to give witness to the
Lord, who is absolute, the only source of salvation and the hope of all
life. They want to be conformed to Jesus' prayer in the Gospel,
and to the example of the first Christian
communities of Jerusalem, without leaving the world, but keeping
themselves from the spirit of the world.
(Jn 17, 15)

Characteristics of
their charisma

Attentiveness to the Word of God, in Scripture and Tradition, gives
life to the communities of Jerusalem; it builds their unity and guides
their course.
The brothers and sisters of Jerusalem strive towards the perfection of
charity, drawing untiringly from the fountain of all love, God Himself,
through personal and liturgical daily prayer and through work, silence
and hospitality, live in accordance with the Gospel.

The
particular characteristic of the monks and nuns of Jerusalem is to
embrace modern urban reality. In the city, they give witness to God,
the only Absolute, and they announce the Gospel of Christ through the
testimony of a life given essentially to contemplation (especially in
eucharistic adoration, shared silent prayer, and lection divina in the
cell) and to fraternal charity.
Thus, the monks and nuns of Jerusalem live both in separation from and
in communion with the city. They aim to keep themselves from the world
and its spirit without cutting themselves off from the world
(Constitutions, §
4-6). " Separated from all to be united to all ", according
to the great monastic adage.
They do not live a "mixed monasticism", which would not make sense, for
the two communities have complete autonomy for housing, government and
finances. However, they celebrate daily liturgy together, singing in
four-part harmony.
